CUMC Katrina Relief Mission Team
Every year since hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, Central has sent a team of men and women on a Katrina Relief Mission for a week at Camp Hope in Van Cleave, Mississippi. The 2012 team goes in late February. Volunteers work with others from across the nation to help families in the area rebuild their homes. Volunteers can be involved in either new construction or rehab of existing homes that were damaged by the hurricane. Inexperienced volunteers are teamed up with volunteers experienced in construction who show them what to do. Training is on the job.
Construction activities can range from installing new flooring, roofing, installing dry wall and mudding, hanging interior and exterior doors, doing trimwork, painting, installing insulation and many other jobs depending on the house. Volunteers not able to do much physical work can perform non-construction activities such as clean-up of building sites, cleaning the volunteers' camp dorm rooms and bathrooms each day and assisting with meal preparation. One or two planning meetings are held prior to the trip. Experienced volunteer crew leaders meet the night before work begins to organize team members based on their experience and preferences.
